“I was surprised, yes. I thought Jesse would be here in the end and I must say the club made him a really good offer,” Moyes said of Lingard’s decision to go elsewhere.

“You couldn’t look back and say that David Sullivan and the owners didn’t do everything they could to get him. They certainly did. I have to say the club has tried to bring in a lot of players, But we could not achieve them due to various reasons.

Asked if he would try to re-sign Lingard in the future, Scott said: “You never know, it’s a tough question, I don’t know how I can answer it. Sal scores 25 goals and has a great performance, so maybe I will. If he doesn’t, I probably won’t.

“That only you would have known. It’s been incredible,” Moyes said of West Ham’s struggle to sign players despite bringing in Gianluca Scamaca, Nayef Aguiard, Alphonse Arriola, Flynn Downs and Maxwell Cornet.

“We’ve bid for many, many bids. Actual bids and real money and various reasons that we haven’t received. They don’t want to come to the club or we haven’t got the financial deal right or we’re going to have to pay the player and agent.” So one way and another we have found it difficult to be competitive this summer. Hopefully at the end of the window we will get ourselves in order.

“The difference is that we are trying to be in the top six instead of avoiding the bottom six. It’s hard to get the player level you want to buy at what it costs, so what we’re trying to do is mean we’re looking at a more expensive player, at a bigger salary, a higher level. coming from, so that’s what we found difficult.”
