Thomas Tuchel admits Chelsea team fears ‘cursed’ No. 9 shirt

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has revealed that no one in the team wanted to carry the club’s infamous number nine shirt this season.

Romelu Lukaku became the latest victim of the numbers ‘curse’ last season, as the £97.5m man scored just eight goals in 25 games, following in the difficult footsteps of fellow victims Fernando Torres, lvaro Morata, Gonzalo Higuain, Radamel Falcao and Mateja Kezman.

The shirt has remained empty this season, and when asked why, Tuchel replied: “It’s damned. People tell me it’s damned. It’s not like we open it for reasons or for a few players in the pipeline.” Leave what can come naturally and take it.

“No. 9 was not in great demand, and sometimes players want to change the number but surprisingly no one wants to touch it.

“Everybody who is taller than me here at the club says to me, ‘Ah you know, he had number 9 and he didn’t score and he also had number 9 and didn’t score. Now we have a There is a moment where no one wants to touch the number 9.”

Tammy Abraham enjoyed relative success wearing the shirt, scoring 15 goals in 34 games as a regular starter under Frank Lampard before scoring one goal every 128 minutes under Tuchel in 2020/21 during his solitary season.
